Location - Lies on both Chamber and Richland Creeks just east of
Corsicana off U.S. Highway 287. The dam stands in Freestone County but most of
the lake spills into Navarro County.
This Y-shaped lake was built for municipal water supply but
also provides excellent recreation. A 44,752-acre reservoir impounding waters of
Chambers and Richland Creeks for Tarrant County (Fort Worth) water supply and
outdoor recreation. Located about an hour south of Dallas off of Interstate 45,
it was built in the late 1980s. It's Texas' 3rd Largest Inland Lake. Many
facilities are still under development. Current visitors will find public boat
ramps, marinas, and a lakeside campground. It is a great all around lake with
deep water for sailing, open water for skiers, and excellent fishing for native
largemouth and Florida-strain bass, sand bass, crappie, coppernose bluegill, and
catfish. Also accessible from Athens, Corsicana, Eureka, Powell, Kerens, Cayuga,
and Fairfield. Controlling Authority: Tarrant County Water Control and
Improvement District Number One. FM 416 east of I-45/Streetman.
Corsicana
Established 1849; early boom touched off in 1894 when city was drilling for
water, accidentally struck oil; one of Texas' first refineries built here in
1897. City was first in state to use natural gas for fuel and lighting, and
crude oil for locomotive fuel. Today retail and wholesale center for rich
blacklands agricultural area. Municipal park, swimming, golf. Home of Navarro
College.
